Williams Events Calendar Widget

The events widget allows you to pull an event list from the Williams Calendar into your sidebar or widgetized content area.

  • Meerkat Theme
cal-widget-demoYou can see a static screenshot of the widget in the Meerkat theme to the right. For a full working example that shows event details when you mouse over them, visit the Arts at Williams site.

The web team will usually set this widget up for you when you migrate your site into the Meerkat theme.

To edit your calendar options, go to Appearances -> Widgets in the dashboard to get to the widget editing interface.

If you need to change the number or type of events listed, you'll need to go to the calendar site to re-build the Localist URL that is used in the widget options (outlined in red, left).

    Generating a new Localist URL

Go to the calendar widget generator. It has quite a few options, but you’ll probably only be concerned about these:

    • Widget Type: must be set to “List”
    • Number of results: determines your maximum number of events displayed in your sidebar. The default is 50, we recommend you pick something lower, in the 5-10 range.
    • Days ahead: determines how far into the future the calendar will list events.
    • Department: here, select the department you want events listed for. Make sure you’re using the Department option that is under “Include all matching instances” and not “Excluded content.” You can choose multiple departments by selecting them one at a time.

Click on the “Preview Widget” button at the bottom of the page – this will open up a new tab/window in your browser. Copy the URL for this new tab/window and use it in the WordPress widget options. The URL will look something like this:
    https://events.williams.edu/widget/view?schools=williams&days=31&num=50&types=5652&format=html

    Adding events to your sidebar

For sidebars, use the widget version of this tool: go to Appearance -> Widgets and drag & drop the Williams Calendar widget into one of your sidebars. Control which/how many events get pulled by editing the widget options (below).

  • Editing Events
Events themselves are not managed in WordPress- you'll need to go to events.williams.edu and click on the green login button located below the header banner, on the right side, to do that.

Documentation and guidelines can be found on the Communications Office website.

Additional help for adding/editing events there can be found on the Localist support site.
